    Neon lights are the beauticians of the city. When night falls and the lights are on, the colorful neon lights dress up the city particularly beautiful. So, how was neon invented? It is said that the neon lamp was accidentally discovered by the British chemist Ramsay in an experiment. It was a night in June 1898. Ramsay and his assistant were conducting experiments in the laboratory to check whether a rare gas was conductive.

    Ramsay injected a rare gas into the vacuum glass tube, and then connected the two metal electrodes enclosed in the vacuum glass tube to the high-voltage power supply to observe whether the gas could conduct electricity.

    At this time, an unexpected phenomenon occurred: the rare gas injected into the vacuum tube not only began to conduct electricity, but also emitted an extremely beautiful red light. This magical red light surprised Ramsay and his assistant. Ramsay named this rare gas, which can conduct electricity and emit red light, neon.     The way to make neon lamps is to use sodium calcium silicate glass with low melting point as the lamp tube, design different patterns and characters according to needs, process them with blowtorch, then sinter the electrodes, evacuate them with vacuum pump, and fill different rare gases according to the required color. Modern neon lights are more exquisite. Some bend glass tubes into various folding shapes to make more moving graphics. Others paint phosphor on the inner wall of the lamp tube to make the color more bright and colorful. Some neon lights are equipped with automatic igniters, so that the lights of various colors go out and shine each other, making the city night colorful. Neon lights have been around for a hundred years since they came out in 1910. It is a special low-pressure cold cathode glow discharge electric light source, which is different from other arc lamps such as fluorescent lamps, high-pressure sodium lamps, metal halide lamps, mercury lamps, incandescent lamps and so on. Neon lights emit light by cold cathode glow discharge under high voltage electric field with low-pressure inert gas filled into glass tube. The light color of neon lamp is determined by the spectral characteristics of inert gas: the neon lamp of light tube type is filled with neon gas, and the neon lamp emits red light. Fluorescent neon lamps are filled with argon and mercury, and neon lamps emit blue and yellow lights. These two types of neon lamps emit light by stimulated radiation of working gas atoms in the lamp tube.


    How is the neon lamp making process?

    In terms of the manufacturing process of neon lamps, whether they are exposed tubes, powder tubes or color tubes, the manufacturing process is basically the same. They all need to go through glass tube forming, sealing electrodes, bombarding to remove gas, filling inert gas, sealing and exhausting pores, aging and other processes.

    Glass tube forming - that is, the process in which the manufacturer burns, roasts and bends the straight glass tube into a pattern or text along the outline of the pattern or text through a special fire. The level of the manufacturer can be seen by the flesh eye.     Sealing electrode - when the lamp tube to be bent is connected to the electrode and exhaust hole through the fire head, the interface shall not be too thin or too thick, and the interface shall be completely burned and melted, otherwise slow air leakage is easy to occur.

    Bombardment and degassing -- the key to making neon lights. It is the process of bombarding the electrode with high-voltage electricity, heating the electrode, burning the water vapor, dust, oil and other substances invisible to the naked eye in the lamp electrode, discharging these harmful substances and pumping the glass tube into vacuum. If the temperature of bombardment degassing is not reached, the above harmful substances will not be removed completely, which will directly affect the quality of the lamp tube. The high temperature of bombarding degassing will cause excessive oxidation of the electrode, resulting in an oxide layer on its surface and the decline of lamp quality. Bombard the degassed glass tube, fill it with appropriate inert gas, and complete the neon lamp manufacturing process after experience.
