The gasket was not the old asbetsos/copper gasket, but a "simple" pressed steel ... sticky substance clinging to #1 exhaust valve which of course had stuck in the ... I use Permatex regularly in my repair work in industry and am very confident in it ... and never used anything except a good metal gasket properly torqued down.
